Hurricane Helene Relief

Tampa, FL – October 2, 2024

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, which caused widespread damage across Florida’s coastal areas, swift relief efforts have been crucial in supporting impacted communities. At the invitation of Daniel Navarro, Director of Volunteer Services for the Salvation Army, Pastor Raul Velasquez, Founder and President of Disaster Response Ministries International (DRMI), activated the DRMI Chaplains Emergency Response Team to assist in recovery operations.

On Monday, October 2, DRMI joined forces with the Salvation Army to provide critical support to the residents of Davis Island, focusing on canteen operations that distributed meals, hydration, and relief supplies. The response extended to the Town ‘N’ Country community in Tampa, Florida, where DRMI provided not only physical aid but also emotional and spiritual care. In collaboration with the Salvation Army, DRMI helped serve Wawa sandwiches, generously donated by Wawa, while offering comfort and encouragement to survivors.

Additionally, in response to an invitation from Hillsborough County Emergency Management, DRMI chaplains have been providing emotional support at Hillsborough County comfort stations, where survivors are seeking relief and resources. These comfort stations have been vital gathering points for residents, and the chaplains have been offering counseling and spiritual care to those processing the trauma of the hurricane.

Together, we have made a significant impact, helping to restore hope to families. Special thanks go to Wawa for their generous sandwich donations, which added a meaningful touch to the relief efforts.

As recovery continues, the partnership between DRMI, the Salvation Army, and Hillsborough County Emergency Management highlights the strength of faith-based and local government collaborations. Their combined efforts continue to provide essential services, supporting survivors on their journey toward healing and recovery.

Thank you, Daniel Navarro, and the Salvation Army, for allowing us to serve alongside you in bringing hope, nourishment, and supplies to the Tampa Bay community during this difficult time.

A special thank you to all DRMI volunteers for being the hands and feet of Jesus during this response.
